Today Capturing Fire came to a close. I knew that this would probably be my favorite event as the Arts intern, but I wasn’t expecting to feel so much inspiration to get back into my own poetry and respect for the individuals who shared their incredibly raw work with us. There was such a great diversity of voices, across the lines of race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, nationality, and mode of spoken word and slam style.

This is a video of Gabe Moses, the Capturing Fire champion! I am honored to have been a part of something so amazing and want to contribute if I am around and able to do so next summer! I loved all of the poems I heard from him throughout the course of three days, but I think this is my favorite. He performed this one in the top three round of the finals yesterday.

When I started my internship I had to start researching the slammers and I knew he was going to make it far in the competition. Although I pretty much loved everyone I heard on stage, I think that Gabe Moses deserved to win!

So I don’t follow my horoscopes or zodiac sign readings regularly, but the past few days—because of Capturing Fire (details of the event listed a few posts earlier)—I have been around people who have talked about character traits attributed to people’s signs. Tonight my friend and the director of Capturing Fire and I got into talking queer and mushy gushy stuff, which was probably alcohol induced, but he asked me my sign.

The linkage of character traits to the signs perplexes me and I don’t know how much stock to take into it. I started to read my horoscope and zodiac readings specific to my birthday and birthyear and was surprised by the connections that could be drawn from them.

I don’t know if this source is “reliable” for chinese zodiac, but here’s the description of goats/rams…

“The receptive, gentle, and compassionate Goat (sometimes called Sheep) is the eighth sign of the Chinese Zodiac. These quiet and sometimes shy people have enormous compassion, an artistic eye, and emotions close to the surface. They often feel especially close to their families.”

Although I wouldn’t call myself quiet, I am sometimes shy. The other attributes seem applicable to me. My internet is slow, so maybe I will post more intriguingly accurate horoscope or zodiac traits I have.

Friday through sunday will be Capturing Fire, which is an international spoken word and poetry festival where queer-identified writers gather for a poetry slam* after 3 days of panels, workshops and performances. I am so excited for this to start! A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience. This event is one of the three main events in which I am responsible for as the DC Center Arts intern. Click the permalink above for the schedule and more information! The Rainbow Crosswalks Of Sydney, Australia

A popular rainbow crosswalk has been suddenly removed from Sydney, Australia’s gay and lesbian district because the city claimed it was a traffic hazard. The crosswalk was created to honor the 35th anniversary of the gay and lesbian carnival, and supporters want to keep the crosswalk because they say it serves as a symbol of the city’s tolerance.

In response to the city removing the crosswalk, people have started creating their own rainbow crosswalks.
